Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Contractor in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills gets the hottest summers in the San Fernando Valley, and that single fact should shape your entire outdoor kitchen. Triple-digit afternoons mean shade is not a luxury item, dark countertops become unusable in direct sun, and outdoor-rated refrigeration has to be specified to hold temperature when the patio is well over 100°F.
RnD Builders is a licensed general contractor (CSLB #1081122) based in the west Valley, and we build outdoor kitchens, built-in grill islands and BBQ islands throughout Woodland Hills — from the flatter tracts south of Ventura Boulevard to the hillside lots up toward Mulholland.
Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Services in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills is part of the City of Los Angeles, so outdoor kitchen work here is permitted and inspected through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). Gas lines, dedicated electrical circuits and any patio cover or pergola over the kitchen are the scopes that trigger review. We pull those permits and coordinate the inspections as part of the build.
Because we are a general contractor rather than a landscape crew, the grill, the gas, the electrical, the hardscape and any structure above it all sit under one contract and one permit set.
Built-In Grill Islands & BBQ Islands
A compact built-in grill island is the most common Woodland Hills project: grill, prep counter, storage doors, and a finish that matches the house. We frame in steel stud or masonry block over a proper footing — never wood — so the island stays square through Valley heat cycles.

Larger builds add a side burner, outdoor-rated refrigeration, an ice maker, bar seating, a pizza oven, or a vent hood under a covered structure. In Woodland Hills we push hard for shade over the cook and lighter countertop material in full sun. Granite, quartzite and porcelain slab all handle UV; indoor quartz does not, because its resin binder yellows outdoors.

Woodland Hills Outdoor Kitchen FAQs
In most cases yes. Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits are issued through LADBS. Running a new gas line, adding dedicated electrical circuits, plumbing a sink, or building a patio cover or pergola over the kitchen all require permits and inspection. RnD Builders pulls the permits and schedules inspections as part of the project.
Outdoor kitchen installation in our service area typically runs $8,000 to $50,000+. A compact built-in grill island starts around $7,000. The biggest cost driver is usually utilities — an island placed near existing gas and electrical stubs costs meaningfully less than the same island 40 feet across the yard. We quote and itemize every project individually.
Most outdoor kitchen and BBQ island builds run 2 to 6 weeks on site. Design and material selection happen first, permitting runs in parallel, then footings, trenching, framing, finish, countertop set and final inspection.
Granite, quartzite and porcelain slab are the reliable outdoor choices here. Indoor quartz is not recommended outdoors because the resin binder yellows under sustained UV. In full-sun patios we also steer clients away from very dark slabs, which get too hot to work on during Valley summers.
