Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Contractor in Los Angeles & Ventura County
Custom Outdoor Kitchens, Built-In Grills & BBQ Islands
A well-built outdoor kitchen turns a backyard into the part of the house everyone actually uses. Whether you want a compact built-in grill island for weekend barbecue, or a full outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, refrigeration, bar seating and prep counters, the difference between a setup that lasts and one that cracks in three summers comes down to what happens under the finish: footings, framing, drainage, gas and electrical.
RnD Builders is a licensed general contractor (CSLB #1081122), and our RnDOutdoors division builds outdoor kitchens and BBQ islands across Woodland Hills, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Tarzana, Encino, the San Fernando Valley, and throughout Los Angeles and Ventura County. Because we are a general contractor rather than a landscape crew, the grill, the gas line, the electrical, the hardscape and any structure over it are all permitted and inspected under one contract.

Consultation and Coordination
Outdoor Kitchen Material Selection
Materials decide how your outdoor kitchen looks on day one and how it holds up ten summers later. Outdoor surfaces take direct sun, temperature swings and, closer to the coast, salt air, so we specify for the exposure your yard actually has.
- Countertops — granite and quartzite for heat and UV resistance, porcelain slab for a clean modern look, or poured concrete for a seamless custom edge. Indoor quartz is not recommended outdoors, because the resin binder yellows in direct sun.
- Island finishes — stone veneer, stucco to match the house, porcelain tile, or board-formed concrete.
- Framing and structure — steel stud or masonry block over a proper footing, not wood, so the island stays square and fire-safe.
- Appliances — built-in grills, side burners, smokers, pizza ovens, outdoor-rated refrigeration, ice makers and kegerators, all specified for outdoor use.
Our supplier network runs across several sources, so material lead times rarely hold up a build. Choose custom pieces for something one-of-a-kind, or proven stock selections when you want decisions made quickly.

Building Your Outdoor Kitchen
How Long Does It Take to Build an Outdoor Kitchen?
Most outdoor kitchen and BBQ island builds run 2 to 6 weeks on site, depending on how much of the yard is involved and whether utilities have to be trenched.
- Design and selections — layout, 3D rendering and material sign-off before anything is ordered.
- Permitting — runs in parallel. Gas, electrical and any covered structure are the items that trigger review, and timing depends on your city’s building department rather than on us.
- Site work — footings, slab or pad, and trenching for gas, water and electrical.
- Build and finish — framing, veneer or stucco, countertop template and set, appliance installation, then final inspection.
Added features extend the schedule. Fire pits, pergolas and shade structures, outdoor bars and pizza ovens are the most common additions, and each one adds scope.
How Much Does an Outdoor Kitchen Cost in Los Angeles & Ventura County?
Outdoor kitchen installation in our service area typically runs $8,000 to $50,000+. A compact built-in grill island starts at around $7,000; fully custom outdoor kitchens with premium appliances sit at the top of that range. Where a project lands depends far more on utilities and appliances than on square footage.
What moves the number
- Utilities — the single biggest swing. Running a new gas line, dedicated electrical circuits or water and drainage across a yard means trenching, permits and inspections. An island placed near existing stubs costs meaningfully less than the same island 40 feet away.
- Appliances — a single built-in grill versus a grill plus side burner, refrigeration, ice maker, pizza oven and vent hood.
- Countertop material — linear footage and slab selection, plus waterfall edges or mitered returns if you want them.
- Hardscape — many yards need patio or paving built or extended to hold the kitchen. That is separate from the kitchen itself and is quoted separately.
- Structure overhead — a pergola, patio cover or shade structure is its own permitted scope.
- Site access and grade — sloped or hillside lots and narrow side yards mean more labor to stage materials and more engineering on footings.
We quote every project individually and itemize it, so you can see what the appliances cost versus the utility work versus the hardscape, and decide what to keep and what to phase. Ask for the itemized version — a single lump-sum number from any contractor makes it impossible to compare bids fairly.
Permits, Gas Lines and Inspections
Outdoor kitchens are permitted work in nearly every city we build in. Gas lines, electrical circuits and any covered structure over the kitchen all require permits and inspection, and the requirements are not identical from one city to the next.
- Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Encino and the rest of the City of Los Angeles — reviewed through LADBS.
- Calabasas — the Planning Division asks that project scope be discussed before a permit application is filed, and many neighborhoods add HOA design review on top of city approval.
- Thousand Oaks — handled by the city’s Building Division, with electronic plan submittal.
- Agoura Hills — reviewed by the Building & Safety Division.
We pull the permits, coordinate inspections and handle HOA submittals as part of the project. Homeowners are welcome to verify our license at any time — CSLB #1081122.
